My great-nephew is turning 3, so I wanted to make him a bright and colorful card. I also wanted to make it fun and interactive, so I decided to make a Shutter card again, but enlarge it to 5 1/4" square when closed .... you'll see why when you open the card! 😄
It had to be large enough to fit a RAINBOW! If you missed my last post, I created a short video on how I made this rainbow - if you make just one, you can get 2 cards out of it! Perfect for this colorful card.
I also decided to use different colors for each shutter piece to add to the colorful-ness 😍
Cutting Measurements for a 5 1/4" square card:
- fits in a 5 1/2" square envelope
- Cut a piece of Mango Melody (base color) to 10 1/2" x 5 1/4" and score at 2 5/8" and 7 7/8"
- Cut a piece of Caribbean blue cardstock (inside color) at 5 1/4" x 4"
- Cut (2) pieces of cardstock (same or different colors) for shutters at 3 1/2" x 4" and score along the shortest side at 1/2"
- Cut a piece for the belly band at 11" x 1 1/2" (you can make it narrower if you'd like, but you'll need the full 11" to wrap around card)
- Cut (2) pieces of DSP (designer paper) for inside flaps at 2" x 5"
- If you want DSP for front flaps, cut (2) pieces at 2 3/8" x 5"
Instructions:
- With your Caribbean blue cardstock (or inside color piece) cut a 2" circle out of the top half , but not too close to the top! I did mine a li'l above the halfway line. (I used the 3rd die from the smallest of the Spellbinders layering circles so it matched up to my rainbow, however you can use the next size larger, 2 3/8" if you aren't adding the rainbow part).
- Add dimensionals to the backside of this piece, only at the top and bottom, NOT along the sides (your shutters will need to slide in and out of sides) and attach to the center of the inside of card.
- Take one of your shutter pieces - it's easiest to lay it onto grid paper with the longest side horizontal, place a ruler vertically at 2" and then place a pencil mark going up shorter side at 1 3/4" - that marks the center of your c.s. Next, with the scored flap to your left side, line your ruler up from the pencil mark (in middle of c.s.) and one of the right corners and draw a line. Now draw another line from center to the other right corner. Cut on your drawn lines. Now you can take your 2nd shutter piece, line up the scored flaps and cut your 2nd piece following the template of your 1st.
- With flap folding to the back side, unfold it and place the pointy ends under the popped up piece, centering it in the circle window and so that the left edge of your open flap is just a tad to the right of your scored line. It should look like a pacman in the window :) Add tear-n-tape or other strong adhesive to the flap of shutter and fold the card flap down onto it to attach. Now open it and you should see that half of the shutter sliding in and out as you open and shut card flap.
- Repeat with other shutter, but make sure you slide the pointy ends UNDER the 1st pointy ends - it will not work right if one point is over and one under.
- Now you can decorate your card with DSP and other elements! If you'd like to add a rainbow, you can watch my tutorial here.
- Have Fun! :)
