More fun with Layering Circle Dies! Today's fun card is called a "Spinner Wheel Card." And actually, I would say this is more of a "turning wheel" card because unlike those spinner cards where it rolls and "spins" as you tilt the card, this one you have to manually turn the wheel by using the scallops with the arrows on them (right side in the cut-out section) or by moving the ladybugs clockwise around in a circle, but nonetheless, it is interactive and adds a really fun element especially for kids (see it in action following the pics).
My card was inspired by Jennifer McGuire's video tutorial here. Although I'm providing a step-by-step picture tutorial below, it may also be helpful to go watch her video!
Card Measurements:
- Base is cut at 9 1/2" x 4 3/4", and scored at 4 3/4"
- Front layer of DSP (or stamp a pc of cardstock) is cut at 4 1/2" x 4 1/2"
- Inside white piece is cut at 4 1/2" x 4 1/2"
- White Scalloped piece for wheel cut at least 4 1/2"
- White scalloped piece for front (images are glued to this piece) cut at least 3"
- several scrap pieces
Instructions:
- With your base layer folded in half, measure in 2 3/8" on each side and put a light pencil mark. Using a ruler and pencil, draw straight lines connecting points to find the center of your card front. (we will erase these later.) IF you have grid paper, you can just line up your ruler and draw the lines from 2 3/8".
- Holding your card so that you have the scored edge of your card the way you want your card to open (top fold or left-hand side), using a 1" circle die, cut a semi-circle out of the right edge of your card (through both layers).
- Flip your card base over so that the semi-circle cut-out is on your left. Turn your top layer of dsp or stamped cardstock over on to it's back and center it so there's equal amount of border all around. Hold it there (do not attach it) just hold with your hands or use temporary tape and carefully flip your card back over (So the front is face up) and place the 1" circle die in the same spot you already cut out. Make sure it fits into the hole snug and place a piece of light adhesive tape (purple craft tape or painter's tape) over the die and the designer paper showing thru. Remove the card base and die cut the semi-circle from the designer paper. Set dsp aside.
- Glue a coin (I used a nickel, but can be a quarter or penny etc.) to the center of your card front.
- Using a circle die that is just a tiny bit larger than your coin (I used a 1" die - same as I used for the semi-circle) and the next size larger, center them so there's equal amounts of space between the two dies and tape them in a couple spots with craft or painter's tape and cut out about 5 rings from scrap cardstock (doesn't matter what color - I used white)
- Glue your rings together in a stack. They should fit around your coin and be slightly taller than the coin. DO NOT glue them to your card base (only to each other)
- Erase your pencil lines from card front.
- Using your largest scalloped circle (or you can use a regular circle if you don't have the scalloped) cut out a piece of white cardstock AND a piece of printer paper (cut them at the same time). My largest scalloped circle is about 4 1/4"
- Take your printer paper scallop and fold in half, turn 90 degrees and fold in half again. Open it up and you can see the middle point. Lay your 1" circle die in the center and tape it there. Then place your cardstock scallop behind this layer (you can use light adhesive tape on one edge if you'd like) and die cut the circle out of both scalloped layers at the same time. Your scalloped cardstock should fit around your coin.
- Take your stack of rings and glue them to your white scalloped cardstock so the holes line up in center. DO NOT glue the scalloped layer onto your card base!! We want this piece to move or "spin" when we're done!
- Turn your top layer (stamped or designer paper) onto the backside and measure and mark the center (2 1/4") with pencil - the same way you did with the base layer. Using a circle die that is larger than the biggest one you used for cutting out your rings (I am using a 2" circle die for this step), cut out a circle in the center of your dsp.
- With your wheel laying over your coin, adhere the top layer - placing either glue OR dimensionals ONLY to the corners of the back side of your Top Layer! We don't want to interfere with the wheel movement. I used 3 dimensionals in each corner.
- Next we need to cut the smaller scalloped circle that goes on the front that our images will be attached to! I used a 2 3/4" scallop circle die. If you don't have scalloped, you can use regular circle, but make sure it's larger than the 2" circle you cut from your top (stamped or dsp) layer.
- Using your 1" circle die, cut out a circle from the center of that scalloped circle.
- Add glue to the top of your stacked rings, and then place that scalloped circle on top, lining up the inner holes.
- Add a dimensional to the center of your coin.
- Stamp a 1 1/2" circle for the center - this piece will stay steady as the wheel of images spin around it (like a merry-go-round). Adhere it to the dimensional.
- Stamp and color your images.
- Lay all your images around your wheel, spacing them evenly around. Add a li'l bit of glue just the bottom portion of your images and attach them to the wheel.
- Draw a li'l down arrow on some of your scallops, or on the edge of the wheel that shows through your cut-out. I drew one, then skipped 3 then drew another etc.
- Add your cardstock on the inside of card (unless your base is light enough in color to write your message on and you want to skip this step!) You'll probably need to cut out your semi-circle.
