Tutorial - Darling Donkeys Double Z-fold Wiper Card with Barn Doors

While creating another wiper card, this time with grey 'Buffalo Check' and barn doors, I thought, why don't I make the doors open to reveal 2 more donkeys?!  Bare with me, I'm no pro on tutorials 😉 but you can find all the measurements & written instructions below

The folded card size is standard 5 1/2" x 4 1/4"

When you pull on both ends of the card, a donkey pops up

When you turn the arrows, the doors open to reveal 2 more donkeys and a message!

Tutorial

*Please note I am not the original creator of the wiper card.  I am sharing what I've learned, along with my own instructions of how I created the barn doors.  Please leave me comments if you try this!  :)

1.  Cut one piece of Smokey Slate cardstock (or color of your choice) at 8 1/2 inches x 4 1/4 inches, and score  at 5 1/2 inches and 7 inches

2.  Cut one piece of thick white cardstock (thicker is better for this piece) at 8 1/2 inches x 2 3/4 inches, and score  at 1 1/2 inches and 3 inches

3.  The decorated pieces are stamped with the 'Buffalo Check' background stamp, or you can use dsp of your choice.  The pieces are ...

•  one piece at 5 1/4 inches x 4 inches
•  two pieces at 1 1/4 inches x 4 inches
•  two pieces at 1 1/4 inches x 2 1/2 inches

4.  Cut two pieces of Smokey Slate c.s. at 2 1/4 inches x 2 3/4 inches and score the longer side of both at 2 1/4 inches.  Burnish fold

5.  Cut four strips of white at 3 1/2 inches x 1/4 inches

6.  Using the hinge dies from the 'Welcoming Window' dies (or you can make your own), cut 6 hinges out of Smokey Slate.  Glue 3 on top of each other for sturdiness - repeat with other 3.

Making the doors

7.  With the grey pieces from step #4 laying in front of you with the scored portion folded to back (and burnished), lay one of the 1/4" white strips diagonal across a grey piece so that the ends slightly extend past the corners.  Make sure it's evenly centered in corners, and glue it down.  Turn it over and using scissors, cut protruding pieces of white off.  Repeat with 2nd door.

8. With another strip of white, place it diagonally going the opposite corners over the other white strip.  Do not glue it down.  You can use temporary tape if you have it, otherwise hold it there with one hand and use the other to turn piece over and snip off protruding pieces of white on both corners.  Turn it back over and lightly mark with a pencil where the lateral lines are from 1st strip and cut that intersection out.  Now glue down both half strips. Erase pencil marks.  Repeat with 2nd door.

9.  Lay your white piece from step #2 in front of you with the 2 scored lines to your left.  Decorate those 2 left sections with the 1 1/4" x 2 1/2" pieces of dsp.

10.  Lay the 2 doors on the larger right side of white piece.  I just eyed it, making sure that there was equal amount of space around & between both doors.  With a pencil, lightly mark a 90 angle at the top and bottom corners of the OUTSIDE edges of doors.  (So the left side only of the left door, and right side only of right door).

11.  Using your cutting tool, cut a slit between your pencil markings.  You might have to go just a smidge more.  Don't go too far!

12.  Slide the scored tab of door into the cut slit in white piece.  Lay piece flat and be sure the door swings open and closed ok. You should be able to see the scored line of grey piece when door is open.  Turn over and glue the grey tab to back of white.  Repeat with other door.

13.   Stamp behind the doors.  I lightly marked in pencil where the edge of the closed door lies so I know not to cross that line with my stamp.  After stamping, erase your pencil lines.

14  Using your Take-a-Pick (or other piercing tool) poke a hole through the larger end of hinges.  With arrows going in opposite directions, line up the holes and run a brad through them - don't flatten the brad yet!

15.  Poke a hole in the center piece between the 2 doors and run the brad through and flatten on backside.

Making the Wiper pop-up

16.  Cut a piece of window sheet (or colored cardstock of your choice) at 2 7/8 inches x 1 5/8 inches.

17.  Holding piece tall-wise, lightly mark "f" for front at the bottom of the side facing you.

18.  Working on the front side, with a pencil, lightly mark in 3/4 inch from 2 adjoining sides (one corner only) and score

19.  Take the white front layer with doors, and lay it face down with the top side closest to you.  Add glue on the FRONT side of corner

20.  With corner tab bent back, place wiper down so that right edge is slightly to the left of the 2nd score line (of the white layer) and at least 1/8 inch in from the top edge of white piece.  Hold til glue dries.

Attaching front to back

21. Lay the back piece so that the 2 scored lines are on your right.

22.  With the wiper extended and out of the way, glue (or use strong tape) just the far left scored section to the far left edge of back.  Pull front layer across flattened back piece and tape (or glue) the back of white layer that covers JUST the far right scored section of the back piece.

23.  Decorate our wiper **** word of caution here.... don't let your image extend past the left edge of wiper or else it will show when closed.

I hope this was easy to follow?!  I'd love your feedback!  I'll try to add a video tutorial to this post very soon.  Thanks for stopping by!
